CEBU CITY, Philippines—A 16-year-old freshman college student died Thursday morning, while three others sustained injuries after a truck bumped a motorcycle, then plowed into five other vehicles and three stalls along the national highway in Sibonga town, 50 kilometers south of Cebu City.
The police said the fatality Joan Joshue, a first year student of the Community College in Sibonga, was waiting for a ride in Simala, Sibonga, when a cargo truck rammed into her after the vehicle crashed into a motorcycle with two riders.
Police Officer 2 Ederlino Bacusmo, Sibonga police traffic investigator, said the truck driven by Julito Antone, 39, was coming from the nearby Argao town and was on its way to seaweed processor CP Kelco in the village of Abogon, Sibonga when the accident happened.
The motorcycle with riders Felix Repunte and Lina Gala of Naga City was coming from the Lindogan Church and was running down a slope when it moved towards the right lane going north towards Cebu City.
Instead of stepping on the brake, Antone stepped on the accelerator causing the truck to hit the motorcycle, then Joshue, the other vehicles and three stalls along the highway.
Joshue died before reaching the hospital while Repunte, Gala and an unidentified passenger of one of the tricycles were brought to the Chong Hua Hospital.
Antone was detained at the Sibonga Police station.
