MANILA, Philippines—The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines grounded all Tomahawk aircraft of flying school Airlink International Aviation Inc. on Friday, a day after one of its trainers crashed off Lubang Island Thursday afternoon, killing a student pilot.
Following standard procedure, CAAP Director General Ruben Ciron said the agency has already “informed concerned air stations regarding the grounding of all Airlink's Tomahawk planes” pending investigation of the incident.
Student pilot Dennis Garcia was preparing to approach the Lubang airstrip for landing when the trainer plane (tail number RPC-771) crashed two kilometers northwest of the Lubang shorline, the CAAP said.
Authorities in Occidental Mindoro said Garcia’s body has been recovered.
The CAAP received information about Thursday's crash through the Philippine Coast Guard more than 15 hours after the incident, but there was no explanation for the lag. The Coast Guard also undertook search and recovery operations in waters off Lubang on Thursday.
Air crash investigators were sent to the area Friday to find out what happened to the light plane. Thursday's incident happened three days after a C-130 plane crashed in the Davao Gulf, killing at least nine servicemen.
