MANILA, Philippines -- Two active low pressure areas on the western and eastern coasts of Luzon could intensify into storms by Wednesday afternoon, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
The first low pressure area was located 330 kilometers west of Mindoro
Island in Southern Luzon, while the second was located 380 kilometers east of Luzon, PAGASA weather forecaster Cris Perez said in a phone interview.
"It is possible that these will intensify into significant weather disturbances," Perez said in a phone interview.
The state weather bureau has monitored scattered rain showers in
Aparri and Tuguegarao towns in the north, Tayabas and Infanta towns in Quezon province, Metro Manila, and Tanay town in Rizal province, Perez said.
Earlier in the day, Nathaniel Cruz, head of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration’s (PAGASA), said summer was “almost over” as more rains were to be expected across the country.
“With the way things are going, summer season is almost over even before school starts,” said Cruz said in a separate phone interview. He added that the agency was expecting the onset of the rainy season at the middle of May.
“If the low pressure area will intensify further, it will enhance the southern monsoon and will bring in the rainy season,” Cruz said.
He clarified that the scattered and isolated rain showers being experienced now were just initial signs of the rainy season.
“Yung mga thunderstorms na na-experience natin, localized lang yun at hindi dala ng hanging habagat. Pag buong Metro Manila na ang nakaka-experience ng ulan, diyan na ang start ng rainy season [The thunderstorms that we are experiencing, that is localized and is not caused by the southwest monsoon. If the whole Metro Manila is experiencing rains, then that is the start of the rainy season],” Cruz said.
