MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE) Congressman Guillermo Cua of the partylist group Coop-NATCCO passed away due to liver cancer.
Cua had been diagnosed with the illness early November.
The lawmaker died at 10:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Capitol University Medical City in Cagayan de Oro City.
Cua was serving his second term in the House of Representatives and was chairman of the committee on people's participation.
Speaker Prospero Nograles called Cua's death a loss to the cooperative movement.
"Congressman Guil [Cua] is such a big loss to the national cooperative advocacy. He is a great friend and a respected colleague in the House. I mourn for his sudden death," Nograles said.
