MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippine National Police is looking into reports that crooked local officials have been using organized crime groups to raise funds for their political ambitions in the 2010 elections.
PNP Director General Jesus Verzosa made the disclosure on Tuesday following the supposed admission of two arrested members of the dreaded Alvin Flores Group that they worked for a mayor of a Pangasinan town.
?All of those allegations will be investigated,? Verzosa told reporters when asked about reports that elected officials were funding the operations of robbery groups.
Verzosa said a certain Warlito Rodriquito turned himself in to authorities in Pangasinan on Monday and admitted his participation in the attack on the Rolex store in the Greenbelt 5 mall in Makati City on October 11.
Rodriquito?s surrender came two days after another suspected member of the group, Dennis Serquiña, was also arrested in Pangasinan.
According to Verzosa, the two suspects both revealed that they worked for an elected official.
He, however, declined to name the local official, but said he was ?a mayor of San Nicolas.?
?There are now revelations being given by the one who has surrendered and we will be investigating? the probable involvement of other personalities (including) political personalities or elected officials,? Verzosa said.
