MANILA, Philippines -- Around 2.5 million devotees are expected to flock to Manila Friday to celebrate the feast of the Black Nazarene, patron saint of Quiapo, but the Manila Police District (MPD) said it is prepared to provide security for the throng.
Superintendent Roberto Rosales, MPD director, said apart from the 500 policemen to be deployed along the route of the procession, 1,200 civilian volunteers will also be deployed to provide assistance to devotees.
Despite the huge crowds that traditionally throng to the vicinity of the Quiapo church, Rosales said police have not monitored noted any major incidents.
“Last year, we only had one complaint of a missing wallet and we are not sure if it was stolen or was just lost while the owner joined the procession,” he said.
Nevertheless, Rosales called on devotees to avoid bringing valuables to the procession, including mobile phones, jewelry, and cash.
“Magdala na lang sila ng tubig, towel, at yung pamasahe na lang, dahil wala ka ring chance na sasagot sa ioyng cellphone [They are better off bringing just water, a towel and their fare, because you won’t be able to answer your cellphone] ,” he said.
Rosales said last year, 42 people fainted during the procession.
He also advised people not to take their children with them.
