MANILA, Philippines--The body of a nine-year-old boy was found in a waterway near their house in a slum area in Tatalon, Quezon City on Sunday, a day after he was reported to have disappeared.

The remains of Johnrey Campilan, a grade five pupil at Diosdado Macapagal Elementary School, was found by a scavenger floating along Mariablo Creek inside España Subdivision at around 8:30 a.m., said case investigator SPO2 Jun Mortel.

According to Mortel, the boy's body was already bloated when residents brought it out from the silted creek.

He said the boy could have died of drowning as the body did not bear any signs of external injuries.

Mortel said the victim's parents went to a police station on Saturday night after the boy failed to return home.

He said the boy was last seen alive by his parents when he left their home around noon Saturday together with his friends.
