MANILA, Philippines -- Two policemen were injured when they were pelted with stones and doused with boiling water Thursday by irate informal settlers in Quezon City.
Senior Police Officer 2 Edmundo Acosta and Senior Police Officer 1 Florante Bartolome, both assigned with the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Fairview Station 5 were injured in the incident and were brought to the San Lorenzo Hospital for treatment.
Responding reinforcements from the station immediately arrested suspects Arnold Baniel,39, and Amelita Dela Cruz, 35, both of 53 Regalado Avenue, in the village of Greater Lagro and detained them at the station.
QCPD station 5 reports revealed that the incident happened at around 11:20 a.m., Thursday, at Block 103 Lot 14 Regalado Avenue near Mindanao Avenue Extension in the village of Greater Lagro.
Village security personnel were assisting perimeter fencing operations of the property owned by Richard Joson, when informal settlers, including Baniel and Dela Cruz, tried to stop them.
The alleged harassment reportedly prompted the Barangay Police Security Office (BPSO) personnel to seek police assistance from Acosta and Bartolome. However the group refused to be pacified upon the appearance of the police officers.
Baniel allegedly picked up some rocks and hurled them at the two cops while Dela Cruz scalded the policemen with boiling water. The two were subdued by members of the BPSO, who allegedly even recovered an improvised shotgun or "sumpak" from them, and turned them over to the police station while the wounded cops were taken to the hospital.
The suspects are facing charges of direct assault on an agent of a person in authority and serious physical injuries.
