MANILA, Philippines -- Following the deaths of 10 people in the bank robbery in Laguna last Friday, the National Capital Region Police Office will start to implement a one-strike policy against police commanders in their areas of jurisdiction to ensure that there will be no repeat of the bloodbath in Metro Manila, NCRPO Chief Geary Barias said Monday.
Barias said the one strike policy would mean station or area commanders would be relieved from their posts once a bank robbery occurs in their area.
Barias said they were implementing the policy even if there has been no incident of bank robbery in Metro Manila since February. But he added that robbers have a new modus operandi in which they attack clients who have just withdrawn money from the bank.
"We advise bank clients to seek assistance from the bank if they will withdraw large amounts of money," said Barias.
Police Director General Avelino Razon also said clients could ask policemen to escort them during withdrawals.
Earlier in the day, Razon also inspected several banks in Cubao, Quezon City to assess whether they were implementing proper security measures.
Police also flagged down vehicles with special and tinted plate numbers.
Razon said police have to be stricter in implementing the no plate-no travel policy, as investigators noted the get-away vehicle used by suspects in the RCBC Cabuyao robbery did not have license plates.
On Friday, robbers at the Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. in Cabuyao, Laguna killed eight employees of the bank, a security guard, and a client and escaped with a still undetermined amount of money.
