Gunmen shot civilians as they begged for their lives

By |

DEAD SPOT The bodies of nine people, including a policeman, lay on the ground and on the truck after they were ambushed by heavily armed men in La Castellana town in Negros Occidental. Nine others were reportedly wounded. PHOTO COURTESY OF THE PNP

BACOLOD CITY—The civilians begged for their lives, but the gunmen didn’t care. They shot them all.

The brutality of it makes the survivors doubt that their attackers were communist New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas.

“It doesn’t seem they were NPA even if they yelled ‘Long live the NPA,’ because [NPA guerrillas] usually spare civilians,” said Avelino Ordoñez, 48, a village peacekeeper who survived the ambush on a truckload of policemen and villagers in Barangay Puso, La Castellana town, Negros Occidental, early on Sunday.

Kids allowed to go

Ronnie Lapiado, 41, a village volunteer and also a survivor of the attack, said that when the gunmen opened fire on the truck the passengers who were standing were hit but those who were sitting on the truck’s bed were not, because the bullets’ did not penetrate the vehicle’s sides.

Lapiado said the civilians called out to the gunmen, “We’re civilians, spare us.”

The gunmen ordered them to get off and lie face down on the ground, Lapiado said.

There were children in the group, but the gunmen allowed them to go, he said.

He said he took off his volunteer’s uniform and jumped off the truck.

Ordoñez did not take off his uniform and jumped off the vehicle with his wife, Virginia, and joined the rest who were lying on their stomachs on the ground.

Civilians shot

Virginia Ordoñez, 50, threw herself on her husband’s back to conceal his uniform, but the gunmen probably had already seen it.

They opened fire on the civilians, yelled “Long live the NPA,” and withdrew.

With his wife covering him with her body, Ordoñez survived the shooting. She did not.

Lapiado was wounded in the hands, but survived the attack.

He, too, doubted that the gunmen were NPA guerrillas because they shot the civilians.

Nine, including a policeman, were killed and 12 (not nine as earlier reported), including two police officers, were wounded in the ambush.

Lapiado said the group helped to secure a village dance contest in Puso on Saturday night. He said there were 22 people on the truck when they left the village after the dance.

But as they were leaving the village, civilians on foot, including children, asked for  a ride on the truck.

Lapiado said there were more than 30 people on the truck when the gunmen attacked the vehicle.

Senseless deaths

On Monday, Florencio Nilles, Puso village head, expressed sadness over the attack on the policemen and village volunteers who kept the peace during the fiesta in his community. He described the deaths as senseless.

“It is difficult for us in our village to understand how such a cruel crime could be committed,” Nilles said.

Ismael Villanueva, head of neighboring Cabacungan village, where some of the dead and wounded came from, said the victims were good men.

The policeman who was killed was a good man and the village peacekeepers worked as volunteers, he said.

La Castellana Mayor Alberto Nicor said it was a sad day for the town.

particularly as they are illegal owners as it is stollen land.

      Merciless is typically their style.

      Arroyo should explain Palparan !

      • ApoLapullapu

You are probably right.  That’s why the investigators should not stop on the NPA angle.  Many crimes have remained unsolved in this country because of quickly blaming the rebels and insurgents as if a crime cannot be solved if indeed it is committed by them.

      • AlexanderAmproz

CIA alias is al Qaeda on the war against terrorism purposes,

        GMA did it a lot.

That why i stopped to go in Mindanao,
didn’t like a headline with a Christian Westerners beheaded in Sulu,
on purposes to kick away unwanted testimonies,
on sam time increasing US subsides for the war on terrorism,
in fact Generals pocket money for junkets or multi residences abroad for retirement time…

With rebels or bandits its easy to become friends,
its happened to me many times.

With Government trained killers, I will have been the target,
no negotiations possible, directly on the headlines.

Should remember Bali time with an organized terror wave
in Zamboanga and Davao Airport by the Jamihah Islamia Philippines branch, an unscheduled small hotel was turned into pieces while two
US agent adjusting mistakenly a bomb, they were badly wounded,
the next day the Marines raided Davao Hospital.
It had driven Duterte very angry and went in the INQUIRER news.
GMA promised to ask her friends for the agents deportation,
no more news since then…. as usually.

  • Noel

If it was not NPA who?  Muslim rebels?  Chinese?

    • AlexanderAmproz

Obviously sugar Baron’s as usual at election time !

  • ARIKUTIK

Pinag babaril ang “poor innocent civilian”, tapos sisigaw ng “long live NPA” ? … tsk…tsk…tsk…. hindi nga mga NPA yon. Malamang Private Army na may malalim na motibo.

    • MULEN

It was done by the NPA and if not, they should have issued a statement denying their participation by now. What holds them back from owning it up is the barbarity with which the ambush was carried out (shooting survivors at close range) and the collateral damage to civilians. For sure, they’re on the process of conducting their own investigation why a lot of civilians were unnecessarily killed, execution style. Probably it was done by young recruits on a test mission.

      • ARIKUTIK

Who will publish the NPA denial ? The massacre is meant to malign the NPA. Proof of the matter IS > The killers shouted “long live NPA” upon killing innocent civilian. The killers are most probably 99.69 % Private Army of Haciendero. The likes of Boy AB in Hacienda Luisita Massacre.

      • MULEN

The deafening silence from the NPA is a telling sign. Their name is being dragged into this and you think it’s for their best interest to keep quite if they have no hand in this massacre of civilians? Surely they are responsible but they opted to keep quite until their own internal investigation is done. They made operational lapses which led to the unnecessary deaths to civilians and that’s what they are investigating. Just my 2 cents.

      • MULEN

What now bro? Still clinging to that ridiculously pathetic statement that 99.69% of the killers are private army of hacienderos?

  • speedstream2

Sadly, this is another all-too familiar incident where the victims and their families won’t see justice done in the foreseeable future.

  • AlexanderAmproz

A little History is needed to understand the origins of this dramatically wrong situation.

At the end of the Spanish colonial invasion run by a greedy and abusive Inquisitional Clergy,
every single piece of land was rob by the Clergy.

The Americans as the new “owners” don’t agree with that as the wanted a piece of the cake.
They request the Clergy to sell their stollen lands.

As they where smart thief’s, they give away for a song their stollen belongings to their relatives.
This is the origins of the sugar barons who where just continuing the slavery organized by the rubbish peoples wearing red robes.

Their relatives to keep their stollen lands, became US collaborators in the organized Genocide erasing 40% of the “Indios” population and burning any single traces of their culture on purpose to improve the slavery system….

Today this messy situation has to be solved on a fair way,
the sugar Barons have to give their stollen possessions to the original owners,
Manila buildings included plus damages for all the wrong doing they have done.

Some shanties should be reserved for them by creeks or smokey Mountain to provide them free food. Arroyo’s, Lacson’s and others Colonial Haciendieros properties belongs to the stollen one. Its still nice to stay alive, the 40% of the eradicated populations didn’t have that luck.

Sooner or later Justice will be served

    • ThudOthwacker

Did you know after the war, is the perfect time to disburse land, wealth and opportunities equally. But the elitists portrayed as a nationalists hijack that window of opportunity when they opted for the scheduled independence. And restored the old order with new local masters. Don’t blame the church, blame your grandparents for letting the elitists have their way.

      • AlexanderAmproz

It’s not that simple, any way, today peoples are still killing each others and will never stop as long justice wouldn’t be served.

This horrible ambush is smelling a sugar Baron pre election destabilization operation.

With the current prolifiration of loose firearms. it is really difficult nowadays to pinpoint accurately who is behind this senseless killings. A private army, hired bandidos, military/police personel doing it on the side(ala Atimonan) or the NPA themselves. But whoever it is, this is still a by product of our corrupt and deteriorating soceity. This had been going on and on and I dont think this will stop or just go away unless we can create a better soceity for ourselves. As long as we choose to elect corrupt officials who just gave us P100 but was out to extract P1,000 of our life blood, then expect more of this killings to come. Corrupt politicians needs private armies who kills at a whim, who turn people into NPA. Corrupt military runs after them and abuse people in the process, which turn some people into bandidos. All of them had hair triggers and it is always the civilian populace who pile up in a grave.

sad to hear this news, it really senseless and those who died are good men and women, hopefully these gunmen will be known soonest.

When Hayden Kho/Kristina Halili sex scandal broke out, every tounge was waggling from Sulu to Batanes. The Senate was quick to jump in to do an Inquiry. Even Jaylo went there personally to pour water at Hayden. Everyone wants a peice of story.
When this news broke out, have you seen people react the way they did at Hayden/Kristina sex scandal. Have you heard people talking about it in the street, in jeepney or anywhere else.  People simply dont care whether its an ambush, human right abuse or whoever perpetrated this. Mabuntis lang uli si Kris Aquino o Mag-away lang uli si Ruffa & Ylmas makakalimutan na ng madla ang mga namatay na ito. And this cycle would continue and we had to watch in horror as it happens again while people are enjoying watching Boy Abunda interviewing a KPOP group in TV.

i see and agree at your point and thats how and who we are. kaya most of the time cases are not solve and hanging in the air and incident simply become history. we are mostly interested on the chismiss not on how to contribute in finding solution. I have also mention this before that we are balat sibuyas, reactive  to the news while the topic is hot but solution to problem are normally forgotten. That is why our politician knows it very well, pag nakagawa sila ng mali, puno ng batikos, gagawin ng politician palalamigin lang ang balita at gagawin muli, kasi limot na naman ang madla sa ginawa nya.

Minsan sabi ko, ke ano pa ang meaning ng in aid of legislation eh wala namang nangyayari, kaya mga politico, puro sarsuela, pakanta kanta sa stage lang panalo na uli sila, kahit sa buong term nila walang gawin , okay lang. kaya tuloy nabuo ang dynasty, kasi alam nilang kahit bofols ang kamaganak nila mananalo parin, dahil hindi naman importante sa atin ang kaalaman. dahil tutuo naman , wala tayong magagawa sa voting masa, in the end they will always be the winner. we could only listen, see and accept. part  lang tayo ng tsismiss , lol

We are where we are, because the general populace allowed it willingly, unwillingly, out of sheer ignorance or lack of awareness. In the 70’s, South Korea realized that they can’t accept their situation and everyone participated in changing for the better. Philippines on the other hand wallows in poverty now because people in general accepted corruption as part of our system. The masses could not care much less who they voted for as long as the canditate is known and popular. The product of these mindset is Bong Revilla, Lito Lapid and Tito Sotto to name a few.

Sadly this voting masses comprises probabaly 75% of the general populace. Majority of the 25% who knew better who cant stomach the current situation just left the country for good even reducing the number of those thinking minority. Sadly this senseless killing is just a by product of the poor decision of the voting masses. Corruption breeds poverty, which results to hunger which result to crime and abuse. We can blame the NPA,bandidos, the Military even CHR  without realizing that the rootcause of the problem is really our poor choice, poor judgement and poor decision.

Correct ka dyan brother , now we are so concerned  but 80 % and more of the voting masses dont even care of what we are, the politicians will simply dance with the music, kaya nauso ang sipsipolitics, turncoatism where every losing politician will suddenly side who are seated in power where they can get the money. Seems like we are living with no ideals in life, we have no delicadeza, a president becoming a congressman, a president wanting to be a mayor as long as they stay in power , in the limelight. Convicted people are the ones who had the machinery to run for politics because they knew there is money along the way. And people who are good but being killed in the process. I knew a place where the Mayor and the congressman are changing places all the time where no other candidates are ever willing to run for that post knowing it will just result to an exercise of futility.
Why we are poor simply because of our leaders in government who are not interested of reforms like dynasty system, poor governance, corrupt practice, weak judicial system. Such reason where 80% of the populace lost interest and simply lives what comes for the day. Thanks brod

We post to encourage those who do good and abhor those who do evil to the soceity. Do not loose hope, time might come where the masses will wake up that the current social and political situation is not acceptable. Only then will things might change for the better. Only then will all this senseless violence and killing will cease to exist. Only then will we see a better future for our children. But until then, we can only encourage and try to enlighten others, as we watch an pray that we will all wake up from this realistic nightmare.

If they are not NPAs, then why kill the innocent civilians? I don’t understand the reason

    • winstoncdumas

       Easy. Set-up.

More to armed groups than the black-and-white view of military/police against NPAs, I’m afraid.

How could tourist come with all these senseless killings in the news? Is iit really really safe in the country? Can the authorities be realy realy 100 percent be trusted?

    • AlexanderAmproz

      Pity for Chinese’s tourists.

It’s OK for the expected innocent Chinese’s,
they only read ideograms and don’t understand English.

For westerners, mostly street’s toughies and ignorants,
low class peoples will come, still good money when minimum wage is 14 months,
5 weeks paid vacations included, about 200’000.- Pesos/monthly salary.

      A sardonic laugh !

  • jga94

Not all NPA men have the same “principles.”And the same goes for our men in uniform—some are rogue….BUT our policemen and armed forces have a written set of rules they swore to uphold…they are bound to these and they are answerable to these…..yung NPA–dahil rebels sila—no such thing or if they do have such “rules” these “rules” are more likely to be broken because their “institutions” are not bound by the same sort of limitations that institutionalized groups have….parang Lord of the Flies…..so I may not surprised na pwedeng gawin ng ibang mga NPA iyan……

    • AlexanderAmproz

AFP & PNP are on the elites duty, NPA are protecting the poorest from the former one.

Officials enjoying to call bandits and terrorists NPA or CPP to justify their nefarious activities…

  • jga94

Malapit na election season….I bet there are also bets fielded by left-leaning grps….eh kailangan din nila ng pondo….this is one way to sow fear amongst people….and if fear is instilled, it’s easier to scare them to pay their “revolutionary taxes”

  • indiosbravos2002

    NPA=common bandits.

  • OFW Franklin

there are 3 types of NPA: 1st the ideaologist’s who are living in secluded place living at peace with their commarade. 2nd the militia who protect the 1st group and carried out military operation. 3rd the break away group who are cast out and restort to bandit work. Criminal activities such salvaging, extortion and terrorist are the handy work of the 3rd group.

    • indiots

don’t categorized them… lahat sila NPA pa rin…

      • OFW Franklin

I guess you are right by saying that, they are all NPA no question about that, but until you came face to face with them you will not notice the diffrence. All I can say we are all Filipino but different in opinion and idea but we have to maintain peace. I respect your’s and you respect mine.

    Culture of impunity

These type of massive killings in our country reflect the complete disregard for human lives.  Innocent civilians caught in the crossfire are simply killed withouth hesitation.  These had been occuring with much frequency lately.  And it had been committed by government agents (police and military), political warlords, non-state actors (NPA, and their variants) and common criminals.  It is committed for different reasons: as a counter-insurgency ploy, to eliminate opposing political factions, to demonstrate the military power  of non-state actors, or simply, to commit crimes.  The deaths of these civilians now in the news is no different from the deaths in Antimonan, the deaths committed by the Ampatuans, and the roberry inside SM malls: They are all manifestations of the  complete disregard for human lives.

In here, it is easy to be confused.  Supporters of the military and the police will say, see if the “rebels” do it, no one complains.  Supporters of the revolutionary causes would say, see the police and the military are so corrupt, we need to overhaul the system.  And when the common criminals and the politicians do it, we are so confused because sometimes, one way or the other, the police/military and the “revolutionary” groups are implicated, one way or the other.  This is made more complicated by a media that sensationalizes the issue, pitting one group against the other, and presenting it as a tele-novela.  The Filipino people gets confused, frustrated and cynical, because after all the media frenzy, the cases did not prosper, no one was held accountable, and the culture of impunity goes on.

We should realize that we the Filipino people are the victims here.  We should go beyond the squabbles.  We should not allow ourselves to be pitted against each other.  We should abhor equally the abuses perpertated by all these groups.  We should accept that there are organizational problems besetting the police and the military that systematically turns some of the brightest and dedicated police and military officers into employing tactics that violate the rights of the citizens.  We should also accept that the NPA and their many and sometimes conflicting variants, despite their lofty ideals, have resorted to “terroristic” methods to keep their organizations afloat.  And we should accept that political warlords have appropriated the power we gave to them to intimidate us and keep them in power.  And the criminals, they will create havoc as long as they know that they can run away from the criminal justice system.

We should be more circumspect.  We should analyze the issue deeper. And the media, hopefully, should delineate the issue clearly.  These are all crimes committed against the Filipino people, and we should not be pitted against each other.

What I always learned is that a fish getting rotten by the head !

A simple question, who are leading the Philippines since 450 yrs. ?

Who failed to educate them and Why ?

Strangely Jesus teaching turned this country into one of the world most violent, Why ?

How come such a rich country is so poor ?
