SORSOGON CITY — A public utility jeepney driver was arrested Sunday night for violating the omnibus election code which prohibits the use and carrying of firearms by civilians within the barangay (village) and Sanguniang Kabataan elections period.

Senior Inspector Mahalaleel Palmones, Sorsogon police public information officer, identified the suspect as Edwin De Torres, 41, resident of Balete village in Bacon District in Sorsogon City. Palmones said the suspect was arrested at a police check point along the national highway at Bacon District around 9:15 p.m. Confiscated from the suspect was a caliber .40 with a magazine loaded with nine bullets.

A violation of Republic Act 10591 or the “Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act” is being readied against De Torres.

The election gun ban started last Saturday and will end on May 22. /je
