DOJ chief to review dismissal resolution on parricide case vs Bohol exec

Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II is likely to look into the dismissal of criminal case against the principal suspect in the death Bien Unido Mayor Gisela Boniel.

In an interview, Aguirre said he only learned about the dismissal of the parricide case against Bohol Provincial Board Member Niño Rey Boniel last Friday after he came back from General Santos City.

“We will have a meeting about this case today (Monday). It has come to my attention only last Friday…after I came back from GenSan,” Aguirre told reporters on Monday.

Aguirre said he will talk to Justice Undersecretary Reynante Orceo, the signatory on the resolution, dropping the case, to know exactly what happened..

“After this, I am going to meet with the Usec. involved, sana ipaliwanag nya sa akin kung ano ang nangyari,” he said.

“But rest assured katulad ng ginawa ko kay Kerwin Espinosa, immediate at kung kailangang magkaroon ng immediate ruling para maitama ang mali. Kung meron mali, I will do this before the day ends,” he added.

Last week, Aguirre went to General Santos City to attend a committee hearing of Senator Manny Pacquiao on the road right of way scam.

Over the weekend, a copy of the Department of Justice (DOJ) resolution was provided to the media.

Niño Rey is being accused of killing his wife, Gisela, in 2017. Reports indicated that Niño Rey shot his wife while they were aboard a boat near Caubian Island in Lapu-Lapu City. Subsequently, he allegedly threw her body off the boat.

The DOJ ordered the withdrawal of the parricide charges after it granted the petition for review filed by Niño Rey. /kga
