DID YOU KNOW: 101st birth anniversary of National Artist Jose Maceda
Today, Jan. 31, is the 101st birth anniversary of National Artist for Music Jose Maceda.
Born in Manila in 1917, Maceda was a notable composer, professor and performer. He was also an active enthnomusicologist.
He studied piano with Victorina Lobregat at the Academy of Music and graduated in 1935.
He received several awards, including the John D. Rockefeller Award from the Asian Cultural Council in New York in 1987, the Philippine National Science Society Achievement Award in 1988, and the award ng Gawad ng Lahi from the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 1989.
He was named a National Artist in 1998. Maceda died on May 5, 2004 in Quezon City. —Marielle Medina
