Manila City gov’t suspends classes, local gov’t work on Jan. 9

The Manila City government has declared a suspension of classes for all levels on January 9, Tuesday, due to the Traslacion of the Black Nazarene.

The class suspension covered all levels in both public and private educational institutions, according to Executive Order No.1 signed by Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada on Wednesday.

Estrada also suspended work in all departments, offices and bureaus in the city government of Manila.

However, police officers, traffic enforcers, and disaster and risk reduction management personnel were not covered under the executive order.

In addition, suspension of work in national government offices and all private offices in Manila was left to the discretion of their respective heads, Estrada’s order stated.

Traslacion 2018 is expected to kick off at Luneta Grandstand at 6 a.m. on January 9. Security officials said they hope the image of the Black Nazarene would be back at Quiapo Church in 12 hours.

In 2017, the procession lasted for about 21 hours which started in Quirino Grandstand, the longest time recorded for the feast. /je
