House majority leader shrugs off minority threats to file Aquino impeach case
MANILA, Philippines — House of Representatives Majority leader Representative Neptali Gonzales on Thursday shrugged off threats by the minority to file an impeachment case against Pesident Benigno Aquino III, saying ‘it’s still a numbers game.”
Gonzales was reacting to threats hurled by opposition Representative Edcel Lagman to impeach President Aquino for defying a Supreme Court ruling lifting the watchlist order issued by the Department of Justice against former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her husband, Jose Miguel.
Gonzales said the “numbers’ game” that prevailed in the impeachment case against former Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez would be seen again in the event of an impeachment attempt against President Aquino.
There are 30 members in the House minority, including the two sons and a brother-in-law of Arroyo, who is also representative of Pampanga.
