LTO, QCPD set up checkpoints vs drunk and drugged driving
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) and Quezon City Police District (QCPD) started to set up checkpoints beginning Wednesday evening to remind the public about the hazards of drunk driving, which falls under the Republic Act 10586 or the the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Law, during the holiday season.
The checkpoint is part of the government’s dissemination campaign to inform the public that the country has a law against driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
“Gusto nating buhayin sa isip nila, sa diwa nila, na teka muna, mayroon tayong batas na ganito na dapat nating sinusunod (We want to enlighten the minds of the people that, wait, we have this kind of law that we need to follow),” Fernando Eligio, law enforcement chief of LTO, said in an interview with Radyo Inquirer 990AM.
During the campaign, the authorities arrested two male motorcycle drivers who were apprehended after being found to be drunk while driving.
Aside from the fine that ranges from P20,000 to P80,000, violators would also be imprisoned for three months, report said. With Justin Punsalang/Radyo Inquirer/jpv
