Classes in Sorsogon, Camarines Norte towns suspended due to ‘Urduja’
LEGAZPI CITY—Classes in the whole of Sorsogon province and in two Camarines Norte towns were suspended Thursday as tropical storm “Urduja” neared Eastern Visayas and Bicol Region.
Classes in all levels, in public and private schools, in the two towns of Camarines Norte were suspended due to flooding and heavy rain on Thursday.
In some areas in Vinzons town, the heavy rain caused rivers to
overflow, said Rhodora Clacio, municipal disaster risk reduction and management officer. Two families in Singi village were forced to evacuate to other private houses due to flooding.
Mercedes Mayor Alexander Pajarillo also suspended classes in all levels in a signed executive order to ensure public welfare and safety.
According to Clacio, classes in Vinzons were expected to resume tomorrow as soon as the weather improves.
In Sorsogon, classes in the entire province were suspended until
Saturday to prepare for the possible impact of Urduja, Joseph John J. Perez, Department of Education Sorsogon division information officer, said.
In Sorsogon Governor Robert Lee Rodrigueza’s Memorandum No. 38, said the implementation was in consideration of the weather forecast of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) that the province will be largely affected by the tropical storm.
The Department of Education in Camarines Norte was also preparing to accommodate residents in case they need to be evacuated to safety, Perez told the Inquirer. Rey Anthony Ostria
