Restive: Mayon quakes continue

LEGAZPI CITY—Mount Mayon was again jolted by at least 25 volcanic earthquakes on Monday, while sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission exceeded the standard daily measurement of 500 tons, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The quakes that rocked the volcano and the spewing of an average of 633 tons of SO2 on Nov. 3, considered above normal, meant that the volcano remained restive, Phivolcs said.

Phivolcs recorded 91 earthquakes around Mayon since Oct. 30.

Ed Laguerta, Phivolcs resident volcanologist, said the tremors could either be due to steam degassing or magma pressure beneath the volcano vent.
