OLONGAPO CITY — A 55-year-old businessman was shot dead by two masked men during a jewelry heist at his house in Iba town, Zambales province on Tuesday night, police said.

Danilo Jaen had just arrived home with his wife, Elizabeth, 49, when the assailants forced their way into the house and declared a robbery at about 6 p.m. The couple owns a jewelry shop, police said.

One of the robbers punched Jaen, grabbed his bags containing assorted jewelry worth P1 million and P250,000 in cash, and shot Jaen before fleeing on a motorcycle, said PO2 Gerald Oyando, investigator at the Iba police station.

Jaen was taken to the President Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Hospital in that town but was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending physician. /je
