Jack Villahermosa was a very active 7-year-old boy until he suffered a bad fall while climbing a tree in Pililla, Rizal in 2008.

He did not tell his mother, Lazarina, about the incident but a month later, he started having epileptic seizures. Jack was later diagnosed with meningitis and a dislocated hip which healed badly, leaving him wheelchair-bound.

In the past seven years, Jack, who is now 15 years old, has been been on maintenance medication for his meningitis and to keep him seizure-free. He also suffers from delayed physical and mental development.

“In all these years, I have kept the faith as his mother. I have also survived the challenge of taking care of him, wheelchair-bound and all,” said Lazarina, a 54-year-old widow.

But her immediate concern is the deterioration of her youngest son’s teeth. Philippine Children’s Medical Center doctors have recommended dental surgery to prevent the bacteria from spreading to his brain. The procedure will cost P66,000.
