DID YOU KNOW: Mariano Cuenco

Today, Jan. 16, is the 129th birth anniversary of former Senate President Mariano Cuenco. Born in 1888, he finished law in 1911 at the Escuela de Derecho  and passed the bar in 1913. He served as Public Works and Communications secretary from 1936 to 1939. He was elected senator in 1941 and re-elected in 1946. He served as Senate president from 1949 to 1951 and continued serving the Senate from 1953 to 1965.  A prolific writer, he was also editor of the Spanish–language newspaper El Precursor of Cebu for many years. —MARIELLE MEDINA, INQUIRER RESEARCH
