Ex-Senator Maceda dies after gall bladder surgery
FORMER Senate President Ernesto Maceda died on Monday night following a gall bladder surgery at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City, his family announced. He was 81.
Maceda first served as senator during the Marcos administration from 1971 to 1972. He won a Senate seat again in 1987 after Ferdinand Marcos was ousted in the 1986 Edsa People Power Revolution.
During the Ramos administration, he served as the Senate President from 1996 to 1998. From 1998 to 2001, he was Philippine ambassador to the United States.
Maceda underwent gall bladder surgery last week. He underwent a heart bypass operation in 1992.
In a phone interview, Ernesto Maceda Jr. said his father had been “in and out of the hospital” and chose to undergo surgery because of “pain and discomfort.” Reports from Aie Balagtas See and Estrella Torres
