DAVAO CITY — New People’s Army rebels staged a series of attacks in the hinterlands of this city and took hostage at least five policemen, including a senior official, and seized assorted firearms on Sunday.

Capt. Roda Leoncito, spokesperson of the military’s Eastern Mindanao Command, said a group of communist rebels harassed a government militia detachment in Sitio Quiman-anao, Barangay Salapawan in Paquibato District, at around 7 a.m.

The 60 heavily armed rebels who attacked were believed to be members of the 1st Pulang Bagani Company led by Commander Jinggoy.
