Strong magnitude 7 quake shakes southwest Japan
A strong magnitude 7 earthquake shook Kyushu island in southwest Japan early Saturday morning, the US Geological Survey reported.
The quake centered one kilometer west-southwest of Kumamoto-shi at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.
Multiple aftershocks followed.
The earthquake occurred a day after a series of foreshocks in the same region, which included a magnitude 6.2 and magnitude 6 tremors. Friday’s events resulted in at least nine fatalities and over 800 injuries.
