World Trade Center to be lit in Belgian colors

NEW YORK, United States—New York’s World Trade Center will be lit black, yellow and red in solidarity with Belgium on Tuesday after 35 people were killed in bombings in Brussels.

The colors of the Belgian flag will light up the 408-foot (124-meter) antenna in an expression of support from the tallest building in the United States, which was built on the site of the 9/11 attacks on New York.

The spire is so tall it can be seen across much of America’s largest city and across the Hudson River in New Jersey.

“Tonight, One World Trade Center will be displayed in black, yellow and red as we stand in solemn solidarity with the people of Belgium, just as they have done for us in the past,” said New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

“New York stands shoulder to shoulder with the people of Belgium and the rest of the world in rejecting the hate and extremism behind this violence,” he said.

New York, Los Angeles and Washington D.C ramped up security on Tuesday in the wake of the deadly attacks. Police armed with machine guns patrolled New York’s Times Square and National Guard troops deployed to airports.
