Suspect in rape, slay of girl falls

POLICE in Laguna finally arrested the suspect in the rape and killing of an 8-year-old girl in the town of Los Baños a year ago.

Senior Supt. Florendo Saligao, Laguna police chief, said Albert de Castro, 44, was arrested by lawmen in the village of Mayondon in Los Baños on Sunday.

Saligao said De Castro, fourth on the list of most wanted men in Laguna, is the prime suspect in the rape-killing of Maricriz Sapin on Dec. 28, 2014.

The girl was reported missing by her mother on Dec. 29, 2014. The next day, her body was found with stab wounds in the face and cigarette burns in the body on a grassy vacant lot in a subdivision in Los Baños.

The crime shocked the town and prompted town and provincial officials to offer cash rewards of up to P200,000 for the arrest of the suspect. Delfin T. Mallari Jr., Inquirer Southern Luzon
