DAVAO CITY—Rotating brownouts are back in the city despite earlier assurances of a steady supply of power in Mindanao.

Ross Luga, assistant vice president of the reputation enhancement department of Davao Light and Power Co. (DLPC), said the firm was forced to implement the one-hour rotating brownouts within their franchise area following the May 10 notice from National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) of a 200-megawatt power shortfall in the Mindanao grid.

DLPC distributes power in the city and surrounding provinces.

Luga said the company received the notice from NGCP only on May 10, Sunday.

NGCP attributed the power shortfall from the reduced power generated by Agus 6 hydroelectric plant of the National Power Corp., the low water inflow of the Pulangi hydroelectric power plant, and the emergency shutdown of one of the two units of Steag’s coal-fired power plant, which will be back on May 13.

“We apologize for the inconvenience that our customers may suffer but it’s beyond our control,” Luga said in a statement.
