NPA rebels storm police station in Mati, Davao Oriental

DAVAO CITY – A still undetermined number of communist guerrillas stormed the police station in Mati City in Davao Oriental on Sunday evening, a military official said.

Maj. Ezra Balagtey, spokesperson of the military’s Eastern Mindanao Command, said members of the New People’s Army opened fire at the Mati City police station at around 7:30 p.m.

A firefight ensued between the rebels and policemen, while government soldiers responded and provided fire support.

Balagtey said a rebel was reported to have died in the firefight.

Firefight is still going on as of reporting.
