DZIQ: MMDA beefs up workforce along ‘killer highway’ in Quezon City
MANILA, Philippines—The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has deployed additional traffic enforcers along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City, which has been dubbed the killer highway because of numerous accidents on it, a Radyo inquirer report said Tuesday.
MMDA told DZIQ that the additional workforce on Commonwealth Avenue was meant to more easily catch drivers and commuters who violate the 60-kph maximum speed policy and the anti-jaywalking law.
Quoting MMDA undersecretary Alex Cabanilla, the report said that MMDA has added 42 motor riders, 89 traffic enforcers and 15 members of the Task Force Kaayusan.
They have also added four MMDA outposts near the University of the Philippines-Ayala Land TechnoHub, Old Balara, Perya and Ever Gotesco mall.
This was done after a Universal Guiding Star passenger bus rammed the taxi that journalism professor Lourdes “Chit” Estella-Simbulan was riding on the night of May 13. She sustained severe injuries that led to her death.
Meanwhile, almost half of the additional enforcers were told to do push-ups as punishment for tardiness, the report said.
