QC informal settlers march towards NHA against demolition of homes

MANILA, Philippines — About 100 informal settlers, led by the Kalipunan ng Damayan Mahihirap, marched towards the National Housing Authority in Quezon City Friday to oppose the demolition of their houses in Sitio (sub-village) San Roque in North Triangle area, police said.

The protest along the northbound lane of Edsa caused a traffic jam but the rallyists were dispersed peacefully by police and members of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), a report on Radyo Inquirer 990AM said.

About 4,000 homes will be affected when the local government pushes through with the demolition and relocation of residents to San Mateo in Rizal, the report said, but Police Officer 3 Antonio Montero of the Quezon City Police District assured the protesters that this would not be carried out just yet.

Residents are opposed to the planned relocation because of the inadequate basic facilities in the site, the report said.
