MMDA sends personnel to typhoon-hit Coron, E. Samar
MANILA, Philippines—The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has deployed its personnel to Coron, Palawan; and Sulat, Eastern Samar—two areas adopted by the agency—after these were devastated by Super Typhoon Yolanda last year.
MMDA chair Francis Tolentino said on Monday that his men would construct boats in Sulat and rebuild the Coron public market which would hopefully bring back normalcy and provide residents with sources of livelihood.
“This is part of our commitment to help areas ravaged by Yolanda recover,” he added.
The teams which will remain in the two areas for more than a week will be supervised by MMDA General Manager Corazon Jimenez.
Under its “Adopt-a-Town” program, the MMDA adopted Coron and Sulat while other local government units in Metro Manila also promised to help in the rehabilitation of other damaged areas in the provinces of Leyte, Eastern Samar, Western Samar and Iloilo.
In January, the MMDA donated to fisherfolk in Sulat 10 motorboats, each equipped with lamps and fishing nets. The agency pledged to donate a total of 50 motorboats to the municipality.
