4.9 quake hits off Ilocos Norte
MANILA, Philippines—A 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the northern Burgos town, in Ilocos Norte at 3:02 a.m. Friday followed by a 4.7 tremor about 30 minutes later, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.
The quakes were centered about 87 to 94 kilometers northwest of Burgos at a shallow 21 to 33 kilometers respectively.
These undersea tremors were followed by a weaker 3.1 magnitude quake at 10:48 a.m.
There were no reports of damage or injury from the temblors.
The Philippines sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where continental plates collide causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
