The country clinched its first overall championship in the Southeast Asian Games in 2005. Hosted by the Philippines, the 23rd SEA Games, which had its opening and closing ceremonies at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila on Nov. 27 to Dec. 5, 2005, respectively, ended with the country winning 291 medals (113 golds, 84 silvers and 94 bronzes). The Philippines previously hosted the games in 1981 and 1991 although it lost the overall title to Indonesia by one gold.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
