MANILA, Philippines—One communist rebel was killed in an encounter with government troops in Agusan del Norte on Friday afternoon, Army Chief Lieutenant General Arturo Ortiz said.

Troops led by a certain Lieutenant Swerte clashed with nine communist rebels and recovered one AK47 and four M16 rifles in the  village of Puting Bato in the town of Cabadbaran, he said.

No one was hurt from the government side. The rebels fled toward the southwest direction, Ortiz said.
