Metro Manila floods ease, roads now passable

A heavy downpour on Sunday night flooded a long stretch of Buendia Avenue and side streets in Makati City, rendering them unpassable to light vehicles including passenger jeepneys. MANILA, Philippines—Floodwaters that submerged many areas in Metro Manila Monday have slowly subsided, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said.

Cecil Baluran of MMDA-Flood Control Unit said floodwaters in almost all parts of the metropolis receded around 4:30 p.m.

But on Abad Santos Avenue floodwaters remained at ankle-level. Recto and Rizal avenues were still plagued by six-inch floodwaters while many people in Pateros got their feet and legs wet with 12 inch-deep flood.

In a Twitter advisory earlier, MMDA said floodwaters reaching chest level hit Zapote/ Jollibbee/Tramo/Tuazon, while waist-deep floods were noted on Taft Avenue, Kalaw Street, Orosa Street, Jose Abad Santos-Tayuman area in Manila, SM City-Sucat, in Parañaque and Moonwalk Alvarez.

MMDA added that floodwaters reached chest-level on Quezon Boulevard Paterno, Quezon Boulevard Soler, Manila City Hall, Quirino Extension/U.N., Malugay Mayapis, and Barangay (village) Yakal.

Flooding in various parts of Metro Manila started Sunday afternoon following intermittent rains.

“Passable na ang lahat ng areas sa Metro Manila (All areas in Metro Manila are now passable),” she said.
