Bosnia teens set off land mine while playing

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina— Police said five children have accidentally set off a land mine while playing in Bosnia, and that one was killed and the others were injured.

The explosion, which police are investigating, happened on Sunday in Hadzici, a suburb of Sarajevo.

Biljana Jandric, a spokesman for the Sarajevo Kosevo hospital, said that teenage boys’ injuries included damage to their abdomens, eyes and arms.

Bosnia’s 1992-95 war left the country filled with buried land mines. Since the conflict ended, they have killed more than 600 people.

The developing country has said it will need 40 million euro ($50 million) a year to meet its goal of clearing all the mines by 2019.
