A 65-year-old man was killed while his son was hurt when the motorcycle they were riding was bumped in the rear by a delivery truck and crashed into a Metro Rail Transit (MRT) concrete pillar on Edsa, Quezon City, on Saturday afternoon.

Samuel Meriel Sr., a resident of Lower Bicutan in Taguig City, was declared dead on arrival by attending doctors at East Avenue Medical Center due to massive head injuries.

His 28-year-old son and namesake who was driving the motorcycle is still being treated at the same hospital.

Traffic sector head Inspector Erlito Renegin said the accident happened at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday on the northbound lane of the Cubao underpass on Edsa, in front of Farmer’s Plaza in Quezon City.

According to him, the motorcycle cut off the bigger vehicle, causing the Isuzu Elf refrigerated truck to hit the back of the motorcycle.

He added that the impact may have caused the younger Meriel to lose control of the motorcycle, resulting in it crashing into the MRT column.

Meanwhile, Jabay, who is facing a charge of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, physical injury and damage to property, insisted that his truck never hit the motorcycle.
