Man tagged in market robbery linked to killing, car theft case
A notorious robber implicated in two heists this month has been tagged in the killing of a businessman whose sport utility vehicle was also stolen by those who attacked him.
Charlie Mamalayan, 27, has been identified as the gunman in the shooting of Genesis Olbedencia, 36, in Barangay (village) Commonwealth, Quezon City. He was arrested earlier this month for a robbery.
On the night of Oct. 16, Olbedencia was shot several times as he was running away from four men who would later drive away in his new maroon Mitsubishi Montero.
Senior Police Officer 4 Alan de la Cruz, theft and robbery section chief of the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit, said at least three witnesses have positively identified Mamalayan as the gunman.
“The witnesses can never forget his face. Mamalayan even carefully aimed his gun before shooting the victim twice,” he added.
The witnesses, all watchmen of Barangay Commonwealth, went to the QCPD-CIDU office on Friday night and implicated Mamalayan, saying they were able to see his face clearly because he was the last one to get into the victim’s SUV.

Citing witnesses’ accounts, De la Cruz said Christopher Castillo was one of two men who were seen waiting in the area and asking for directions before Olbedencia arrived in his SUV.
“Their group is reportedly involved in robbery, car theft, gambling, prohibited drugs and other illegal activities,” De la Cruz said.
The police official said they were still digging up past incidents which may involve Mamalayan or any of his cohorts. So far, Mamalayan has been implicated in two other criminal cases.
Case investigator PO1 Romeo Nino said they were preparing charges of robbery with homicide and carjacking against the arrested suspect.
Both Castillo and Mamalayan have been charged for a P120,000 robbery on Dec. 20 at the Suki Market in Barangay Sta. Teresita.
Mamalayan was arrested that same day in Calamba City, Laguna, while Castillo, reportedly a barangay councilor in Batangas, remains at large.
