Man kills brother, hurts mother in Talisay attack
Liquor, hot tempers and an old grudge proved a deadly mix for the Bardilas brothers last Sunday evening in barangay Poblacion, Talisay City.
The elder brother Joselito, 34, shot dead his brother Jeffry, 28, after a heated argument during their drinking spree.
Police said the incident was an isolated one on the eve of the Talisay City fiesta yesterday.
Jeffrey suffered a gunshot wound in the chest, right arm, and ankle. The brothers’ mother, Judith, was also wounded in the right leg after she was hit by a stray bullet during the shooting.
Both victims were rushed to the hospital for treatment, but only Judith survived the attack.
Joselito fled after the shooting but was arrested after a hot pursuit operation in Talisay City.
Article continues after this advertisementJoselito told police that he was harboring an old grudge against his brother. Already drunk, the brothers started arguing and it was then that Joselito pulled out a gun and shot Jeffry.
Article continues after this advertisementPolice, however, failed to retrieve the gun, which Joselito claimed to have thrown away after the shooting.
In Consolacion town, northern Cebu, an unidentified assailant shot and wounded a teenager also last Sunday.
The teener was wounded in the neck, left knee and right shoulder. He was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Consolacion police said that the victim was talking to friends outside the Consolacion cemetery when two men on a Honda XRM motorcycle arrived and the backrider suddenly pulled out a gun and shot the teenager.
Ecelyn Quimod, 18, a neighbor of the victim, was wounded by a stray bullet in the right wrist.
Police said the assailants, wore blue jackets with hoods, fled after the attack.
Police said they were still investigating the incident.
In Tabuelan town also in northern Cebu, a gunman shot dead a habal-habal driver during a benefit dance to mark the barangay’s fiesta at 1 a.m. Sunday.
Maxima Mantos, 34, died after he was shot in the chest.
Witnesses identified the shooter as Manuel Poero, 33, who escaped after the shooting.
Police said that Poreo harbored a grudge against the victim. The victim’s neighbors told police that earlier Poreo tried to stab the victim but they stopped him and brought him to the barangay hall. /Correspondents Gabriel C. Bonjoc and Correspondent Joy C. Quito
