New Yorker in Pasil shown in Cebu
THE localized version of Marcelino Agana Jr’s New Yorker in Tondo, a 1950’s Rock N’ Roll musical comedy, is shown at Bantawan Sugbo for the second time.
Following its 2007 production, Cebu Performing Company, with the direction of Palanca Award winner Crispin Ramos Jr., presents once again A New Yorker in Pasil – a local adaptation for Cebu audience.
With original music and lyrics by American indie film music composer Daniel Marcus, this localized musical version of Agana’s work centers on Kikay, a Pasil girl who fled to New York for a year. But when she comes back to her hometown she intentionally forgets everything and everyone in the area.
Supporting the character of Kikay is Tony, a famous rock star in the Visayas and Mindanao, who also happens to be Kikay’s childhood friend and secret fiance. When Kikay broke all communications she had with Tony when she was in New York, Tony turned to Nena, another childhood friend, and they, too, got engaged. Also a part of the five-character production are Totoy, Tony’s best friend who is secretly in love with Nena, and Aling Atang, Kikay’s eccentric mother.
