UC Law gives free legal seminar, other services

Senior law students from the University of Cebu with law professor Gloria Estenzo-Ramos gave a free legal seminar and conducted an online voter’s registration for the residents of barangay Jaclupan in Talisay City, southern Cebu last Sept. 1.

The event aimed to educate ordinary laymen about frequently asked questions in various fields of law and to encourage residents to register to exercise their right to vote in the 2013 elections.

The topics included basic facts about labor law, land titles, civil law particularly how to change one’s name and the anti-red tape law.

Environmental legal statutes such as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2003, Clean Air Act of 1999, Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010 were discussed to prepare the residents in case natural disasters occur.

The speakers spoke in Bisaya about common legal problems and its remedies.

The speakers were Estenzo-Ramos for environmental law, lawyer Vincent Deo Albeos for labor law, William Dibdib for land titles and Robie Quino and Michelle Descartin for civil law.

An off-site voter’s registration was also conducted by the Talisay election officials and assisted by the law students at the Jaclupan Elementary School where at least 26 residents registered as new voters.

The activity was sponsored by Sean Yu, Jacinto Jamero, Adrianne Tirado. Marlyn Conopio, Leandro Aparente Jr., Mario Rizon and Jocelyn Alce, and supported by Jaclupan officials headed by barangay captain Joel Orbiso and Talisay City district election officers.
