Defending champion USJ-R survive UC in Cesafi volley
REIGNING champion University of San Jose-Recoletos bucked an opening set loss to prevail over the University of Cebu, 24-26, 25-18, 25-13, in the girls competition of the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. volleyball tournament yesterday at the University of San Carlos gym.
The win gave USJ-R seven points to lead the way in the standings.
In contrast, the 10-time champions and last year’s runners-up University of Southern Philippines Foundation lost to USC, 19-25, 21-25, and fell to second place with just six points. USC is at third with five points.
In the boy’s competition, USJ-R defeated USC, 25-10, 25-18.
Over on the women’s side, USPF downed UC in a thrilling five-setter, 28-26, 24-26, 25-13, 22-25, 15-8.
The win was a bright ray of sunlight in what has been a dismal season for the former powerhouse squad as it put four points to their name. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
