Pasay council declares state of calamity

The local disaster council in Pasay  headed by Mayor Antonino Calixto on Wednesday passed a resolution placing the city under a state of calamity, following reports of widespread floods that require evacuation and relief operations.

“The damage caused by the severe southwest monsoon has been unprecedented and Pasay was not spared. Some 25,000 families in Pasay alone have been affected by floods caused by the torrential rains,” Calixto said in a statement.

No fatality  was recorded, he added.

Calixto   said the move would enable the city government and the barangays to utilize and tap their respective quick response funds to meet the existing calamity.

It will also allow the local government to program or reprogram funds for the repair and safety upgrading of public infrastructure and services.

Severely affected by the floods in Pasay are Barangay Kalayaan (5,362 families), Maricaban (698 families), Barangay 179 (770 families), Barangay 178 (721 families), Barangay 190 (680 families, and Barangay 193 (1,035 families).

The water level reached almost 6 feet in Maricaban, San Lorenzo and   Yakal Streets, Mulawin Road, 16 Street, 29th-31st Street, 14th Street, Rosas Street, Rosal Street, Almazor Street, Magkakaisa Street,  4th Pildera Street and Malibay.

Some 31 persons living under Tambo Bridge along MIA Road were also rescued by Barangay 191 officials  and the Pasay City Rescue Team.

Some 13 evacuation centers have been set up as temporary quarters for dislocated residents.

The Pasay Social Welfare Department has been providing the evacuees with relief goods and cooked food.
