Stags log fifth straight win

THE SAN SEBASTIAN Stags kept on rolling as they won their fifth straight game following their 89-68 demolition over the Arellano University Chiefs in the 88th NCAA basketball tournament late Saturday night at the Arena in San Juan City.

After bungling their first game against Letran, the Stags have suddenly come alive and rolled past the Chiefs, even leading at one point by a whopping 30 points at 83-53.

The win gave the Stags a share of the lead in the standings as it put their record at 5-1 (win-loss), the same as the Jose Rizal University heavy Bombers.

Arellano on the other hand, fell to 2-5.

Two-thirds of the famed “Pinatubo Trio” were on their game during that match as center Ian Sangalang scored 27 points on top of 17 rebounds while reigning league MVP Calvin “The Beast” Abueva, had his usual numbers with 22 points and 16 boards.

The Chiefs were led by the 18 of John Pinto but got little else from everybody, including leading scorer James Forrester, who was limited to just seven points.

Today, the Stags and JRU gun for win no. 6 as they take on separate opponents. San Sebastian battles the listless Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals at 4 p.m. while JRU takes on the St. Benilde Blazers in the nightcap.
