PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur — A juvenile Brahminy Kite (Haliastur indus) eagle was rescued in Barangay Timan, Liloy town, Zamboanga del Norte after a concerned resident reported the distressed bird to the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO).
Roserverico Tan, chief of the Regional Strategic Communication and Initiatives Group (RSCIG) of DENR-9, told the Inquirer that CENRO-Liloy personnel retrieved the young raptor on Wednesday, June 3, following a report from Tito Elogsong, who found the bird in a weak condition near his residence.
Elogsong said he observed several crows harassing the eagle at around 1:30 p.m. on June 2.
After the weak bird descended and rested nearby, he picked it up, placed it in a cage and reported it to DENR authorities.
The Brahminy Kite was picked by CENRO-Liloy for assessment and appropriate wildlife management intervention.
It is currently being monitored at the office’s wildlife holding facility.
Initial observations showed no visible injuries, though further evaluation will be conducted before its possible release back into the wild, CENRO-Liloy reported.
CENRO-Liloy commended Elogsong for his prompt action and reporting, stressing that public cooperation plays a vital role in wildlife conservation.
The office also encouraged residents to immediately report injured, distressed or displaced wildlife to proper authorities to ensure their safety and proper handling.
The Brahminy Kite eagle is a protected bird species commonly found in coastal and inland habitats throughout the Philippines, serving an important role in maintaining ecological balance. /apl
