Makati to give P51 million aid to LGUs hit by disasters

MANILA, Philippines — The Makati City government has allocated P51 million in financial assistance to local government units (LGU) affected by typhoons, southwest monsoons, and volcanic eruptions this year.

According to Makati City Mayor Abby Binay, the amount will cover 83 disaster-stricken municipalities and cities.

Of the total amount, P21.75 million was designated to 34 LGUs heavily impacted by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine, while P3.5 million was allocated for six LGUs affected by Super Typhoon Julian.

“The city has also allotted P11,250,000 for the 21 municipalities of Camarines Sur and Northern Samar affected by Tropical Cyclone Enteng and Southwest Monsoon last September,” Binay said in a statement on Wednesday.

Binay emphasized that the city stands in solidarity with the victims of Kristine and other disasters that have struck this year.

“We remain firm in our commitment to sharing our resources to help affected localities recover and build back better,” the mayor added.

The Makati LGU also allocated P10.5 million to 14 LGUs impacted by the combined effects of Tropical Cyclones Butchoy and Carina, as well as the southwest monsoon or habagat.

Additionally, two LGUs in Cotabato will receive financial aid amounting to P1.5 million for the combined impact of Tropical Depression Butchoy and the southwest monsoon, while Quezon Province will receive P750,000 to assist those affected by Typhoon Aghon.

Furthermore, P1.25 million has been allocated for LGUs affected by volcanic activities from Kanlaon Volcano in the Negros province.

Apart from the financial assistance, the Makati Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office has provided relief supplies, as well as search and rescue teams, to aid in the relief operations in Batangas and the Bicol Region.

“We are ready to extend our expertise, resources, and full support to aid in the recovery and rebuilding of affected LGUs,” Binay stated.
