Fire victims to leave school by May 30

The Barrio Luz Elementary School principal is giving fire victims temporary shelter in their classrooms only until May 30.

Grade school principal Jeanne Egger said that they originally wanted to have them vacate their school on May 25 so they can start the cleanup, popularly known as Brigada Eskwela in preparation for the June 4 opening of classes.

Barangay Luz captain Rian Tante said they are requesting for a May 30 deadline as the fire victims are still in the process of rebuilding their homes.

Thirty-three-year-old Estrella Ginolos said they still have to receive the P1,000 assistance from the barangay for building materials.

“Bisan gamay, among dawaton, para makabalhin na mi,” she said.

At least 36 classrooms in the school are still being occupied by the victims of the May 11 fire that displaced more than 500 families.

According to City Hall’s Department of Social Welfare Services, the sschool has 158 grade school pupils and 47 high school students affected by the fire.

Department of Education (DepEd) Cebu City Schools Division Superintendent Rhea Mar Angtud said they will conduct an inventory to check damages in the classrooms occupied by the fire victims.

“If we were to decide, we want to start it early,” said Palanca, hoping that the residents would move out within the week as they still have to attend a three-day seminar on May 30, 31 and June 1.

Palanca said they understand the situation of the families, but she said the affected residents should also understand that teachers and students will be using the classrooms soon.

Tante said that Cebu Rep. Tomas Osmeña of the south district  promised to provide the fire-affected students free school supplies.
