Basco and Palanan airports shut down amid stormy weather

MANILA, Philippines — Operations at the Basco Airport and Palanan Airport were suspended as severe weather conditions continued on Tuesday due to Typhoon Carina (international name: Gaemi).
The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (Caap) said all flights to and from Basco Airport and Palanan Airport have been canceled.
Basco and Palanan airports are located in areas placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) earlier on Tuesday.
Based on Pagasa’s early Tuesday morning bulletin, Typhoon Carina-boosted southwest monsoon, locally called habagat, is anticipated to bring moderate to intense rainfall in many areas of Luzon’s western portion.

It raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 in 10 areas of Luzon as Carina kept its strength while crossing extreme Northern Luzon and moving toward Taiwan.
The 10 areas under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 are:
- Batanes
- Babuyan Islands
- Northern and eastern portions of mainland Cagayan (Santa Ana, Gattaran, Baggao, Peñablanca, Lal-Lo, Gonzaga, Buguey, Santa Teresita, Aparri, Camalaniugan, Ballesteros, Allacapan, Abulug, Pamplona, Claveria, Sanchez-Mira, Santa Praxedes, Lasam, Alcala)
- Eastern portion of Isabela (Divilacan, Palanan, Maconacon, Dinapigue, Tumauini, Ilagan City, San Mariano, Cabagan, San Pablo, Santa Maria)
- Northern portion of Apayao (Calanasan, Luna, Pudtol, Flora, Santa Marcela)
- Northern portion of Ilocos Norte (Pagudpud, Bangui, Adams, Dumalneg, Burgos, Vintar)
- Northern portion of Aurora (Dilasag, Casiguran)
- Polillo Islands
- Calaguas Islands
- Northern portion of Catanduanes (Pandan, Bagamanoc, Panganiban, Viga, Gigmoto, Caramoran)

Several flights were also canceled on Tuesday because of the stormy weather.
Class suspensions in different localities were likewise imposed amid persistent rains.
According to Pagasa’s last monitoring, Carina was located 380 kilometers east northeast of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, packing maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 160 kph. — Felice Nafarrete, intern
