Phivolcs: Taal Volcano belches 2,400-meter plume on June 22

MANILA, Philippines — Taal Volcano had a degassing activity at its main crater early morning on Saturday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Based on Phivolcs’ visual monitor of the Agoncillo Observation Station, the degassing activity happened from 1:30 a.m. to 7:55 a.m. and produced thick plumes that rose 2,400 meters high before drifting northwestward.

Philvolcs noted that Taal has been degassing “significant volumes” of volcanic gas since March 2021.

Saturday’s advisory likewise indicated that the volcano released 4,641 tons (4, 210 metric tons) of sulfur dioxide last Thursday, June 20.

Phivolcs added that Alert Level 1 remains in effect over the volcano.

The state seismologist repeated its reminder that entering its island, especially the Main Crater and Daang Kastila fissures, as well as occupancy and boating on Taal Lake, and flying any aircraft close to the volcano are still prohibited.
