MANILA, Philippines – A Makati-bound 14-wheeler-truck slammed into the foot of the flyover bridge on Quezon Avenue, Quezon City, early Thursday, snarling traffic that stretched up to North Avenue for hours, radio reports said.

Hours later, another truck hauling off construction materials rammed a lamp pole at the Kamuning flyover, causing another traffic gridlock, this time on the north-bound lane of EDSA from the foot of the bridge to the Nepa-Q-Mart.

In the Quezon Avenue accident that occurred around 2 a.m., the truck’s helper, Harris Santos, was tangled in the wreckage and members of the rescue team from the Metro Manila Development Authority have to use  steel cutters and hydraulic jacks to extricate him from twisted metals.

Santos was taken to the East Avenue Medical Center for treatment of cuts in the head and thighs.

According to the truck’s driver, Crisanto Ocampo, he lost control when a speeding bus nearly hit his vehicle. But MMDA traffic enforcers did not buy Ocampo’s story, suspecting the driver might have fallen asleep, the report said.

Stacks of hollow blocks tumbled out of the truck as a result of the crash, aggravating the misery of early morning motorists.
